In Italy, a translation is only legal valid when the translator has taken an oath before a court. In order to have the translation validated, the translator must take the following oath “I hereby solemnly swear that I have correctly and faithfully fulfilled the assignment with which I was entrusted, with the sole purpose of making the truth known.”
Sworn translations in Italy are subject to stamp duty at a rate of one € 16.00 per 25 lines, including the translator’s oath
Official certification (by means of a dedicated stamp) of legal quality by the Legalisation Officer who signs the deed or document, as well as the authenticity of the signature itself, that makes deeds issued in Italy valid abroad.
Legalisation is performed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office or Prefecture.
Legalisation is required for countries that were not signatories of the Hague Convention.
Under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 on promoting the free movement of citizens by simplifying the requirements for presenting certain public documents in the European Union, certain types of public document are exempt with regard to authentication.
An apostille certifies the authenticity of a public document sent from/to a foreign country and is a simplified form of legalisation. Apostilles are required by those countries that signed the Hague Convention of 5/10/1961.
No legalisation or apostille is required for documents sent between certain countries under the Brussels Convention of 25 May 1987.
For those sectors to which Regulation 2016/1191 applies, if an EU citizen submits a public document issued by the authorities of another country, the receiving authorities cannot demand for the document to have an apostille.
The price of a translation is calculated on the basis of the following criteria:
- file format (Word, Excel, pdf, etc.)
- number of words to be translated
- technical level/ complexity of the text
- urgency
- if the document needs to be sworn or requires legalisation

ANALYSIS
The source text must be analysed to identify its characteristics and to establish the specific expertise needed for the translation.
TRANSLATION
The text is then translated in writing using a special advanced-technology software programme to guarantee the continuity of the terminology used and the fastest turnaround times.
QUALITY CONTROL
During this phase, I re-read the whole translation, using special software to detect any typing errors or other mistakes (such as numbers, dates, etc.) that could escape the naked eye.
PRODUCTION OF THE FINAL VERSION
Once these steps have been completed, the translated text is sent to the client with the same format and page setting as the original.
